Xinhua News Agency, Abidjan, August 29 (Reporter Zhang Jian) - Niamey reports: The Niger Ministry of Defense issued a statement on the 29th saying that some soldiers at the 101 military base in the capital Niamey attempted to stage a coup that day, but the situation has now been brought under control.

The statement said a group of soldiers "violating military discipline and regulations" attempted to detain other soldiers at the 101 base. The Nigerien military acted swiftly to control the situation and gradually restored control over the relevant areas.

The statement called on local residents to remain calm and to continue their normal production and daily activities.

In the early hours of the 29th local time, there were reports of intense gunfire and explosions in multiple locations in Niamey, including around Diori Hamani International Airport and near the presidential palace.

As of now, the Nigerien authorities have not released information on casualties resulting from this incident.
