Currently, each of China's three coastal military regions is equipped with one hospital ship, achieving full coverage of the East, South, and North Seas. They do not have missile systems or naval guns, are painted entirely white, and feature large red cross markings, making them one of the few specially designed and built 10,000-ton professional ocean-going hospital ships in the world.

Capable of performing complex surgeries and handling various injuries

The hospital ship is fully equipped

China's dedicated ocean-going hospital ships have medical facilities equivalent to those of a top-tier hospital, with a full load of over 14,000 tons, a total length of 178 meters, a maximum speed of 20 knots, and an ocean endurance of 5,000 nautical miles, capable of global transoceanic navigation.

All three ships are equipped with 8 operating rooms, 300 beds, and 20 ICU beds, complete with CT, blood banks, dialysis, and a full chain of medical technology units, capable of performing complex surgical operations and treating various battle injuries such as blast injuries and burns; the 867 Silk Road Ark enhances ocean endurance and self-sustainability at sea, adding a negative pressure isolation and epidemic prevention area; the 868 Peace Ark adds 2 clean operating rooms, equipped with PCR laboratories and expanded isolation wards, capable of treating infectious patients in large numbers.

The hospital ships do not carry onboard weapons, only medical equipment and rescue helicopters, and are protected under the Geneva Conventions, enjoying a special status of immunity from attack during wartime.

Currently, the People's Navy has established a three-tier maritime medical rescue system consisting of large ocean-going hospital ships, medium-sized hospital ships for near and mid-seas, and fast rescue boats for coastal areas. Hospital ships do not follow combat vessels directly into the frontline but serve as mobile top-tier medical treatment nodes at sea, collaborating with the entire maritime medical support system to form a complete rescue chain:

Equipped with complete top-tier hospital treatment capabilities, specifically receiving severely injured personnel, responsible for complex surgical operations, large-scale disaster relief, and overseas humanitarian medical missions.

Combat vessels with embedded medical units: Frontline emergency stations

Combat vessels come with their own medical capabilities, equipped with operating rooms and monitoring wards. They receive injured personnel transported by helicopter, prioritizing emergency treatments such as hemostasis and wound cleaning, with severely injured personnel transferred to the hospital ship.

Modular medical cabins on comprehensive supply ships: Accompanying mobile medical points

Lightweight medical configurations that can be flexibly installed and dismantled. Mainly serve daily ocean patrols and escort missions, handling common injuries and minor wounds.

Compact in size, able to approach warships. Capable of providing simple first aid on-site and transporting injured personnel over short distances.
