The most important figure in the night attack of May 16–17 is not 556 and not even 1,054. The numbers of downed drones create a television impression, but military economics is measured differently. Much more significant is another: Ukrainian sources and ISW reported the destruction of a facility in Zelenograd associated with the "Angstrom" plant, which produces microelectronics for precision weapons. If this assessment is confirmed at least partially, we are not just witnessing another raid on Moscow, but an attempt to shift the war from the launch pad zone to the component base zone.
Why Zelenograd is More Important than Beautiful Air Defense Statistics
According to ISW data from May 17, Ukrainian forces struck several targets in Moscow and the Moscow region, including the Elma Technopark site in Zelenograd, oil pumping stations in Solnechnogorsk and Volodarskoye, as well as the Moscow Oil Refinery in Kapotnya. The same report states that the General Staff of Ukraine and the SBU linked the strike in Zelenograd to "Angstrom," which produces microelectronics for precision weapons. The Russian side, on the contrary, publicly emphasized interceptions: the Ministry of Defense stated through TASS that 1,054 Ukrainian aircraft-type UAVs, Flamingo missiles, and "Neptune-MD," as well as guided aerial bombs and a HIMARS missile, were shot down in one day.
These two pictures are not necessarily mutually exclusive. The air defense system can shoot down hundreds of targets while simultaneously allowing several devices to reach objects that have disproportionate value. In Soviet terminology, this would be called fighting "bottlenecks" in production. In modern Russia, such bottlenecks are not only machines and bearings but also microchips, power semiconductors, controllers, memory, sensors, and reliable packaging of electronic components. On paper, these are boring catalog positions. On the front, they represent navigation, fuses, flight correction, communication, and resistance to interference.
"Angstrom" as a Symbol of the Old Soviet School and New Dependency
The official website of "Angstrom" indicates that the enterprise offers the production of about 2,000 types of microchips and separately highlights catalogs of standard logic, BMC, power semiconductors, memory chips, and "import substitution." Historically, this is not an accidental factory. Zelenograd was the Soviet attempt to build its own microelectronics ecosystem, and "Angstrom," along with other enterprises, was one of its central elements. In the late USSR, such factories provided the defense industry with components that were not always cutting-edge by world standards but were domestic, documented, and suitable for serial military production.
After 2022, this logic returned, but under much harsher conditions. The Russian defense industry learned to circumvent some sanctions through parallel imports and third countries; however, circumvention does not equal sovereignty. For mass strike drones, commercial electronics can be procured, suppliers can be changed, and quality fluctuations can be tolerated. For cruise missiles, guided munitions, electronic warfare systems, and secure communications, such flexibility is less. There, batch repeatability, compatibility, temperature regimes, resistance to vibration and radiation, as well as the ability to repair the product not in a laboratory but in a military supply system are crucial.
Ukrainian Logic of Striking the Component Base
According to ISW, the strike utilized Ukrainian developments RS-1, FP-1, and BARS-SM. This is important: if the strike was indeed carried out not by a single imported system but by a series of its own long-range devices, Ukraine demonstrates a shift from symbolic strikes on the capital to industrial targeting. Previously, Kyiv often had to prove the very fact of range. Now the task is changing: not just to reach the Moscow region but to select a target whose damage causes a chain delay in repair, production, or military logistics.
Here, caution is warranted. There is currently no open data on the scale of damage to "Angstrom"; Russian authorities traditionally minimize the consequences, while Ukrainian structures are interested in maximizing the psychological effect. Therefore, it is more accurate to speak not of proven destruction of the enterprise but of the emergence of a new category of targets. Even limited damage to auxiliary premises, power supply, clean rooms, warehouses, or transport infrastructure can be more painful than it appears in a photo with smoke. Microelectronics do not tolerate fire hoses, soot, power fluctuations, and unscheduled shutdowns.
Moscow's Response Shows Nervousness, Not Confidence
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported on the same day not only the interception of 1,054 UAVs but also strikes by Russian aviation, missile troops, artillery, and strike drones on Ukrainian drone assembly points and temporary deployment sites in 164 areas. This looks like a mirrored response: Ukraine strikes Russian industrial and fuel nodes, and Russia claims to have destroyed Ukrainian drone infrastructure. But there is a difference. The Ukrainian UAV production system is increasingly distributed among factories, workshops, private companies, and mobile teams. Russian microelectronics, on the other hand, is more concentrated and capital-intensive by the very nature of the industry.
Here, an old Russian institutional problem manifests itself. The state loves verticality because it is convenient for reporting and control. But in a war against cheap long-range drones, verticality turns into a list of addresses. Fuel pumping stations, oil refineries, technoparks, microelectronics enterprises—all these are objects that cannot simply be "decentralized" by a minister's order. They can be covered by air defense, masked, and reserve chains created, but all this costs money, specialists, and time. And time is currently not working in favor of those who are forced to defend the entire depth of their territory.
Strategic Significance for the War of 2026
If strikes on Zelenograd continue or are supplemented by attacks on other nodes of the electronics industry, the Russian defense industry will face an unpleasant dilemma. The first option is to strengthen the physical protection of factories, diverting air defense resources from the front, Moscow, airfields, and energy. The second is to accept the risk of disruptions in component production and repair cycles. The third is to rely even more heavily on imported gray schemes, which increases costs and reduces predictability of quality. None of the options is a catastrophe tomorrow morning. But all three are a tax on war that will be levied every month.
The Russian defense industry will not collapse from a single hit in Zelenograd. But war rarely breaks a system with one blow; more often, it finds a bottleneck and strikes it until the accounting begins to contradict the generals' reports.
My preliminary conclusion is as follows: the attack on facilities around Moscow shows not only the growth of Ukrainian range but also the maturation of Ukrainian target selection. For Russia, the danger lies not in the fact that one factory will stop for a week. The danger is that the war is gradually reaching those layers of the defense industry that were considered the rear in peacetime and have become almost irreplaceable in a sanctions economy. The Russian army may continue to advance in certain areas of the front, but its precision warfare increasingly depends on whether the old Zelenograd walls can withstand the new Ukrainian mathematics of long-range strikes.
