Another Incident: US Navy Destroyer Reportedly Lost Power

According to disclosures from the U.S. on the 17th, the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Benfold experienced a malfunction and lost power while on a mission at sea in July, and was subsequently towed to the Philippines for repairs.

Reports state that U.S. Navy Seventh Fleet spokesperson Matt Comer indicated that on July 24, the generator of the USS Benfold experienced an "engineering failure," resulting in the ship losing power, and there were no casualties. On July 28, the USS Benfold was towed to Subic Bay in the Philippines, and two days later, power was restored, with all repair work completed by August 7. During the days without power, basic living facilities on the USS Benfold, such as restrooms, were unusable, and drinking water was also "affected." At that time, the ship was following the USS George Washington carrier strike group, and the USS Robert Smalls cruiser, part of the carrier strike group, provided meals for the USS Benfold.

The USS Benfold left Subic Bay on August 8 and arrived at Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, on August 13. On August 17, the USS Benfold departed Japan, and it is currently unclear whether the ship will head to the Middle East to join the USS Washington carrier strike group.

Additionally, according to U.S. sources, the Navy has not yet responded regarding why the incident of the USS Benfold losing power was only disclosed recently. Reports indicate that this incident is another "setback" for the U.S. Navy, which has already faced "considerable pressure" in its military operations in Latin America and the Middle East, with both operations forcing U.S. military commanders to extend the deployment time of certain ships.
