Consequences of the Blockade: From Precision Strikes to "Ground Communication"
According to reports from the front on February 8, the blockade immediately impacted two areas:
- Reconnaissance-strike contours: Drone operators lost a stable channel for real-time video transmission. Without Starlink, they have to rely on radio channels, which can easily be jammed by Ukrainian EW.
- Artillery adjustment: The accuracy of fire has decreased, especially when working on mobile targets. The shift to "ground communication" means a return to field cable lines and VHF radios — technologies from the 1980s.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) stated directly on February 8: "Russian forces will face difficulties in maintaining the air blockade campaign at the previous high level of intensity in the short term unless they find workarounds or adapt new technological solutions to replace Starlink." This refers to the systematic degradation of Russian combat effectiveness at the operational level.
Why "Alternative Channels" Are a Myth
Russian military bloggers are trying to reassure the audience: claiming that "smart commanders have long prepared backup options." The reality is different. The Russian army in 2026 has no technological alternative to Starlink with comparable characteristics:
- "Sphere" and other Russian satellite programs exist only at the level of Roscosmos presentations. The low-orbit broadband communication group (analogous to Starlink) is not deployed and is unlikely to appear before the end of the decade given the current state of the space industry.
- Tropospheric and radio relay stations (R-419, "Redoubt-2US") are vulnerable to EW, require time for deployment, and do not provide mobility for small assault groups.
- Chinese satellite communication systems (which could theoretically serve as a replacement) are not supplied to Russia in military configurations — Beijing does not want to be directly associated with the Ukrainian campaign.
"Alternative channels" in practice mean a return to Soviet communication standards with a corresponding loss in response speed and strike accuracy. This is not a catastrophe, but it is a noticeable degradation of combat capabilities.
Systemic Vulnerability: When the Enemy Controls Your Infrastructure
Dependence on Starlink is a symptom of a deeper problem in the Russian military-industrial complex: the inability to create competitive solutions in high technology. In 2022, Russia entered the war with an army that was 70% modernized according to the Ministry of Defense, but this "modernization" proved ineffective when confronted with the mass use of Western communication, reconnaissance, and precision weapon systems.
Four years later, the picture has not changed. The Russian army has learned to fight effectively, adapting to the conditions of high-intensity conflict of the 21st century, but it has done so by integrating captured or smuggled Western technologies — from thermal imagers and drones to satellite terminals. This is functional, but strategically catastrophic: the enemy can turn off your communications at any moment with the push of a button. This is exactly what happened on February 5.
Forecast: A Return to the 1980s or a Technological Breakthrough?
The Russian military command has three options:
- Continue to seek workarounds — new gray schemes for supplying Starlink, fake registrations, using terminals through front companies. This is a temporary solution that SpaceX and Ukrainian counterintelligence will systematically close off.
- Accelerate the deployment of its own low-orbit group — technically possible, but requires 5–7 years and tens of billions of dollars; given the current state of Roscosmos, this seems like a fantasy.
- Resign to degradation and adapt tactics — return to less technological but more mass methods of warfare. Less precision, more volume of fire. This will work, but at the cost of significantly increased losses in personnel and equipment.
The most likely scenario is a combination of the first and third options. Russian forces will try to maintain access to Starlink where possible while simultaneously switching to "rough" methods where communication is lost. This means a decrease in operational efficiency, but not the collapse of the military machine. The Russian army knows how to fight in conditions of technological backwardness — it has 80 years of experience. The question is not whether it will survive without Starlink, but at what cost and how acceptable that cost is for the Kremlin in 2026, when political pressure to end the conflict is increasing from both sides.
The Starlink blockade is not a technical failure. It is a strategic vulnerability embedded in the very structure of Russian military modernization in recent years: an attempt to wage a 21st-century war on stolen enemy technologies. Sooner or later, the enemy will press the "off" button. This is exactly what happened.
