British Army explores pairing Ajax with a robot scout

ARX Robotics UK and General Dynamics Land Systems-UK are launching a collaboration to explore turning the British Army’s Ajax armored vehicle into a command hub for robotic ground “wingmen,” the companies announced Sept. 16, 2026, in London.

The initial work will focus on integrating ARX’s Hector uncrewed ground vehicle with Ajax, testing whether crews inside the vehicle can task, monitor and employ autonomous systems for reconnaissance, protection and combat missions. The companies plan to connect the two platforms through Generic Vehicle Architecture, a common digital interface standard the British Army uses so different vehicles and systems can share data and commands without custom-built wiring for each pairing.

Ajax itself has had a difficult path into service. General Dynamics UK originally began developing the digitally networked reconnaissance vehicle in 2010, with deliveries repeatedly delayed by noise and vibration problems that at one point halted testing entirely. Production vehicles finally reached British Army units in January 2025, and the program declared initial operating capability that November. Training was suspended a month later after soldiers reported symptoms including nausea and hearing problems during an exercise. An Army Safety Investigation Team review completed in April 2026 found that recorded noise and vibration levels were within legal limits, and the Army resumed Ajax trials that same month. Full operational capability is still expected sometime between October 2028 and September 2029, once all 589 vehicles across six variants have been delivered and units trained to use them.

Hector is a newer addition to ARX Robotics’ lineup. The wheeled, mid-range uncrewed ground vehicle runs on the company’s Mithra OS software and is built for optional manned operation, meaning a soldier can drive it to the edge of a mission before switching it to remote control or supervised autonomy. It comes in combustion and all-electric versions, the latter aimed at reducing noise and heat signatures in the field.

ARX Robotics, founded in Munich in 2021, has built its reputation mainly on a different vehicle, the Gereon, which the company says forms the largest Western-built uncrewed ground vehicle fleet currently deployed in Ukraine. The company has expanded into the UK through ARX Robotics UK, backed by the NATO Innovation Fund, and says it is investing £45 million in UK manufacturing and research and development.

This enables capability to evolve at the pace of technology, ensuring the British Army can continuously adapt, exploit innovation faster than its adversaries, and maintain a decisive battlefield advantage in an increasingly complex and contested operating environment.”

“The British Army does not need to choose between its existing platforms and the new generation of autonomous systems. The opportunity is to connect them so they fight as one integrated force with the right high-low mix,” said David Roberts, Chief Executive Officer, ARX Robotics UK. “By combining Ajax with Hector autonomous wingmen, we can extend the reach and capability of crewed platforms while reducing the number of soldiers who need to be exposed to danger. Just as importantly, this collaboration is about building the industrial capacity and skills base to produce and support these systems here in Britain. If the UK wants to field autonomy at meaningful scale, it needs the sovereign manufacturing capability to match.”

Beyond the technical integration work, the two companies said they will look at whether GDLS-UK’s manufacturing site in South Wales could support UK production of Hector and future autonomous systems, covering final assembly, CNC machining, supply-chain development and workforce training.
