Canada Announces Largest Defense Procurement Plan in History
Ottawa/Berlin, July 6 (Xinhua) - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on the 6th that the German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems has been selected as the preferred supplier for Canada’s largest defense procurement project in history, the "Canadian Patrol Submarine Project," with plans to purchase up to 12 submarines.
Of the four submarines currently in the Royal Canadian Navy, only one is operational. The Royal Navy plans to acquire up to 12 modern submarines to replace the aging Victoria-class submarine fleet.
According to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office, the German submarines that Canada intends to procure will have capabilities for Arctic patrol, underwater surveillance, and special forces deployment. The Canadian government will negotiate contract details with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, with the contract expected to be finalized by the end of 2027 at the latest, and the first four submarines are expected to be delivered by 2034.
Canada also stated that if negotiations with the German supplier are unsuccessful, Canada may designate South Korea's Hanwha Ocean as the preferred supplier for the next round of negotiations. The submarine project will prioritize investment in the Canadian domestic supply chain, aiming to create high-paying jobs locally and boost the defense industry.
According to previous reports from German media, the German government hopes to facilitate a multi-billion euro submarine deal with Canada around the NATO summit to deepen defense cooperation between the two countries.
According to a report by the German news agency DPA, citing sources from the German government, "If successful, this will connect Canada with us for decades to come," and this submarine deal will be a "very good starting point" for strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Additionally, Canadian media reported that if future maintenance and operational costs are included, the total value of the submarine project contract could reach 100 billion Canadian dollars.
