Canada plans to deeply participate in the Japan-UK-Italy fighter jet project.

According to a report by Reference News Network on September 15, Asahi Shimbun reported on September 13 that regarding Canada's participation as an observer in the Japan-UK-Italy next-generation fighter project in July, Canada's Ambassador to Japan, Ian McKay, stated in Tokyo on the 10th that Canada will contribute to the entire project with its outstanding technology in aircraft, radar, and satellite operating systems, with the ultimate goal of becoming a formal member of the project.

The report states that the next-generation fighter joint development project "Global Combat Air Program," promoted by Japan, the UK, and Italy, is highly anticipated, aiming to strengthen and expand the security assurance network of so-called "friendly nations." McKay emphasized that in the context of many countries increasing their defense budgets, "it is important to better understand what actions 'friendly nations' are taking and how to build the highest level of technology through cooperation."

McKay said, "Canada has energy resources such as oil and natural gas, as well as critical mineral resources, while Japan can provide capital, technology, and expertise in supply chains."

McKay also serves as Canada's special envoy for the "Indo-Pacific region." He stated, "One of the important pillars of the 'Indo-Pacific Strategy' is to strengthen and continuously carry out regional defense and security cooperation." The two countries are intensifying efforts to maintain maritime order in the Arctic region through the development of icebreakers and new technologies.
