In the early morning of September 12, North Korea launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles from the vicinity of Wonsan on the east coast, flying approximately 250 kilometers. Two days after detection by the South Korean military, the Korean Central News Agency described this as an integrated firepower attack training combining ballistic and cruise missiles, attack drones, and large-caliber multiple rocket launchers. This occurred the day after the conclusion of Japan-U.S.-South Korea's Freedom Edge 2026.
Air Defense Network Established Without Aircraft Carriers

Freedom Edge, conducted from September 7 to 11 in the eastern and southern waters of Jeju Island, was a five-day multi-domain exercise. U.S. aircraft carriers did not participate, and the training focused on integrated air and missile defense (IAMD), maritime denial, cyber operations, defense medical support, and real-time data sharing, primarily involving six surface combatants and land-based aviation.
The announced vessels included two South Korean Sejong the Great-class destroyers, Japan's Atago-class destroyer Atago, Asahi-class destroyer Asahi, and the U.S. Navy's Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Benfold. At least four out of the six ships are equipped with Aegis combat systems. Reports indicate that Japan deployed P-1 patrol aircraft, SH-60K helicopters, F-15 and F-2 fighters, E-767, E-2D, KC-46A, and KC-767, dispersing the functions of an aircraft carrier air wing across multiple bases with aerial refueling.
Integration of Fire Control Over the Number of Missiles
What North Korea emphasized this time was not the range of a single weapon but the operation of an "integrated fire control system." This concept aims to bundle different launch platforms with the same target information and command structure, concentrating ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones, and rockets without time delays. While KCNA's claim of "100% accuracy" requires independent verification, it is undeniable that the attacking side is attempting to complicate the identification and prioritization for the air defense side.
The strengths of Japan, the U.S., and South Korea lie not only in the radar of Aegis ships. The ability to share tracking information from different communication networks within minutes, linking airborne early warning from E-767 and E-2D, surface monitoring from P-1, and connecting fighters with refueling aircraft, becomes a practical evaluation axis. Although the scale of six vessels is not large, if this connectivity can be maintained without an aircraft carrier, it will be easier to ensure redundancy in air defense even in situations where bases are threatened.
Blind Spots Remaining in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force
On the other hand, dispersed deployment also amplifies logistical weaknesses. A reliance on land-based facilities for aircraft means that runways, refueling facilities, maintenance hubs, and data link relay stations become targets for attack. North Korea is said to have commissioned the approximately 5,000-ton destroyer Gang Gon, increasing its options for ship-launched missiles. The more Japan emphasizes the ballistic missile defense capabilities of the Atago, the more questions arise regarding the operational rate of destroyers, ammunition resupply, and the adequacy of base protection.

The missile launch immediately after the conclusion of Freedom Edge serves as a signal testing Japan-U.S.-South Korea cooperation both militarily and politically. However, it is premature to view North Korea's actions merely as a mechanical response to the exercises. Even amidst discussions of potential diplomatic contacts, Pyongyang is not operating its conventional and nuclear forces separately, but is accumulating achievements in integrated firepower. The true blind spot is not whether missiles can be intercepted, but whether the political and military command structures of the three countries are seeing the same picture before deciding to intercept.
