Chad to Send Troops to Haiti to Combat Gangs
According to a report by Reference News Network on April 23, Agence France-Presse reported on April 20 that Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby announced on the 20th that Chad will deploy 1,500 soldiers to Haiti under the framework of the United Nations-established Gang Suppression Force (GSF).
Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas and has suffered from violent activities by criminal gangs for many years. These gangs frequently commit murder, rape, robbery, and kidnapping.
In a speech read to the members of both houses by National Assembly President Ali Kolo Tchami, the Chadian president said, “Our country will send 2 battalions to this force, with 750 men per battalion, totaling 1,500 personnel. Currently, an advance team of 400 has been deployed to Haiti.”
