But seeing it displayed on a launcher is different from seeing it hung under a J-15's wing. The latter means the weapon is mature enough for real integration with the PLAN's carrier air wing.

Still, the point of a longer-range weapon isn't just to guarantee a kill — it's to push the threat ring outward and force the defender to commit resources earlier. Every 100 kilometers of additional range means the defending carrier has to dedicate more fighters to combat air patrol, more missiles to defense, and more planning time to worst-case scenarios.
Not a Single Event
The YJ-15 deployment didn't happen in isolation. In 2025, China's Liaoning and Shandong carrier strike groups operated together in the South China Sea for the first time. Later that year, both groups deployed simultaneously beyond the first island chain into the western Pacific — the longest duration of any Chinese carrier operations outside that defensive line. The Pentagon's 2025 China military power report projects that China aims for a six-carrier fleet by 2035. Whether that timeline holds or slips, the direction is clear: more carriers, more capable air wings, and more pressure on everyone else's operational planning.
What This Means for US Planning
For the US Navy, this is another data point in an ongoing calculation about where and how carrier strike groups can operate in a high-threat environment. The 2026 National Defense Strategy has shifted toward deterrence by denial, emphasizing the fortification of the first island chain rather than relying solely on power projection from carriers.
That doesn't mean carriers are obsolete — they remain among the most survivable and versatile airfields in the Pacific. But it does mean the geometry of a Taiwan contingency keeps getting harder. A carrier operating 500 kilometers from Taiwan was already inside the threat envelope of land-based DF-21D and DF-26 anti-ship ballistic missiles. Now add carrier-based fighters with 1,200-kilometer anti-ship missiles, and the problem compounds.
The comfortable operating distance for a US carrier strike group — the range at which it can project power without accepting unacceptable risk — keeps shrinking. The YJ-15 is one more increment in that direction.
Industrial Capacity Supports This
