Fujian's commissioning or trials do not automatically create a U.S.-style carrier strike group. The harder challenge is institutional: pilots, deck crews, maintainers, commanders, doctrine, and repeated deployments.

2018Hull modules appear at Jiangnan

Large hull sections consistent with a third Chinese carrier are observed on the Changxing Island slipway. The design breaks with Liaoning and Shandong: a flat deck, an angled landing area and a smaller island, rather than the Soviet Project 1143.6 layout both earlier ships inherited.

2022-06Launched and named Fujian (18)

The ship is floated out at Jiangnan on 17 June 2022 and named after Fujian province, with hull number 18. Chinese state media confirm at launch that the carrier is conventionally powered and fitted with electromagnetic catapults and arresting gear.

2023-11Catapult testing begins pierside

Deck imagery shows dead-load runs along the catapult tracks while the ship remains at the fitting-out pier, the first external evidence that the electromagnetic launch system is being exercised rather than merely installed.

2024-05First sea trial

Fujian leaves Jiangnan on 1 May 2024 for an initial trial focused on propulsion and electrical plant. Nine trials follow over roughly eighteen months, progressively adding combat systems, arresting gear and finally fixed-wing flight operations.

2024-09Arresting gear fitted after fourth trial

Following the fourth trial of 3-21 September 2024, arresting gear is installed in the angled deck and foul lines are marked out around the forward catapults in December, the configuration required before any aircraft can be recovered aboard.

2025-03Seventh trial carries the first flight operations

Analysts assess that most of the flight-deck footage later released by the PLA Navy was shot during the seventh trial, 18 March to 1 April 2025. Launches visible in that imagery come exclusively from the forward portside catapult.

2025-09J-35, J-15T and KJ-600 shown operating together

On 22-23 September the PLA Navy releases footage of all three new types conducting catapult launches and arrested recoveries from Fujian. It is the first electromagnetic catapult launch of a stealth fighter anywhere, preceding the F-35C's equivalent milestone aboard USS Gerald R. Ford.

2025-11Commissioned at Sanya

Fujian enters active service on 5 November 2025 at the naval base in Sanya, Hainan, assigned to the Southern Theater Command Navy. Xi Jinping attends the flag-presentation ceremony and inspects the ship; Shandong and a Type 075 amphibious assault ship are present in port.

Strategic significance

Fujian's importance lies less in tonnage than in what a catapult removes from the equation. On the ski-jump decks of Liaoning and Shandong, a J-15 buys its takeoff run with fuel and ordnance, and the group has no fixed-wing airborne early warning at all. A catapult launches aircraft at full load and, more consequentially, launches types a ramp cannot: the KJ-600 gives a PLA Navy task group organic wide-area radar coverage for the first time, extending detection and targeting well beyond what a Z-18J helicopter and shipborne sensors can provide. Pairing that with the J-35 and the J-15DT electronic warfare variant gives the ship a mixed wing structured much like a US carrier air wing, which is a change in kind rather than in degree.

The technical claim underneath is also worth separating from the operational one. China moved directly from ski-jumps to electromagnetic catapults, skipping steam entirely, and by September 2025 had shown three aircraft types launching and recovering - including the first EMALS launch of a stealth fighter by any navy. That sequencing was faster than most outside assessments expected, and it happened without the publicly visible reliability troubles that dogged USS Gerald R. Ford's catapults and weapons elevators. What is not yet demonstrated is sustained sortie generation: how many aircraft the ship can cycle per day, whether all three catapults can be run concurrently under load, and how a conventional steam plant supplies the electrical demand of continuous launches. Those figures have not been released, and the released footage has consistently shown single-catapult operations.

A reasonable near-term reading is that Fujian is a capability the PLA Navy now possesses but has not yet fully worked up. Commissioning at Sanya places it with the Southern Theater Command, closest to the South China Sea and to contingencies south and east of Hainan, and it will spend a period in trials and air wing qualification before deploying as a formed strike group. Even then, a conventionally powered carrier remains tied to replenishment in a way a nuclear one is not, and a single such hull cannot maintain continuous presence. The more consequential question is what Fujian teaches: shipyard imagery already points to a nuclear-powered successor, and the deck procedures, catapult experience and aircrew pipeline being built now are the inputs to that ship rather than the end of the program.
