Danish New Recruits Begin Extended Service Period

According to a report by Reference News Network on August 7, Reuters reported on August 3 that, driven by security pressures in the Arctic and the war in Ukraine, Denmark is accelerating its defense buildup. Under the country's new conscription system, about 1,600 new Danish recruits began an extended service period of 11 months on the 3rd.

In 2024, Denmark will include women in the conscription for the first time, extending the standard service time from 4 months to 11 months, and by 2033, the number of conscripts will increase from 5,000 to 7,500 each year.

As new recruits enter service, Denmark is preparing to deploy conscripts to Greenland for the first time later this month, with a company of over 100 soldiers taking over duty from the professional military for a month. U.S. President Trump has repeatedly sought to annex this semi-autonomous Danish territory on the grounds of national security, a demand that has been firmly rejected by both the Greenland and Danish governments, making this deployment politically significant.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated at the NATO summit in Ankara last month that her country is prepared to defend every inch of the military alliance's territory, "including our own territory."

New recruits will undergo 5 months of basic training, followed by 6 months of duty. The Danish Armed Forces are also introducing new types of conscription, including a drone platoon from the Special Operations Command.
