Ethiopia appears to receive Chinese FK-2000 air defense systems

Ethiopia’s military appears to have gained a new shield for its drone fleet: Chinese-made FK-2000 air defense systems, most likely delivered through the United Arab Emirates.

Video shared on TikTok reportedly shows at least two of the truck-mounted systems on the road to Amhara, the northern region where government troops have been fighting Fano militias for more than three years. No government has confirmed the delivery. It is not known how many systems Ethiopia received, when they arrived, or who paid for them.

“The Chinese-made FK-2000 short-range air defence systems will likely be deployed around Bahir Dar Airport in northern Ethiopia, protecting ENDF aircraft and drones stationed there alongside UAE-operated Akıncı drones,” said open-source analyst Rich Tedd.

Bahir Dar, the regional capital, has served as a drone base before. Satellite images from October 2022 appeared to show Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones parked at its airport. The Akıncı is a larger combat drone from the same Turkish manufacturer, Baykar.

The FK-2000 works much like Russia’s Pantsir. A single eight-wheeled truck carries both missiles and guns. Its 12 radar-guided missiles can reach targets about 25 km (15.5 miles) away and up to 12 km (39,000 feet) high, while twin 30 mm cannons deal with threats that get closer. The system is built to bring down drones, helicopters, aircraft and cruise missiles, day or night and in bad weather. It is made by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation.

The same weapon has turned up elsewhere in Africa, and the trail has led back to the UAE before. Chad was earlier reported to have received two FK-2000 units. In August 2025, The Defence Blog reported claims that systems the UAE had bought from China were sent to Chad and then moved into Sudan, to the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group. Abu Dhabi did not confirm that transfer.

In Ethiopia, the systems are heading into a hot war zone. The army has fought Fano, an Amhara nationalist militia movement, since April 2023, and has leaned heavily on drone strikes. Local media and rights groups have reported repeated civilian deaths from those strikes.

Fano launched offensives across Amhara in March 2026, disrupting preparations for the June 1 national elections in parts of the region. The army sent reinforcements and struck back, but conflict data from ACLED showed May on track to be Fano’s busiest month of the year. In late April, Fano fighters reportedly staged a surprise attack near Bahir Dar itself.

Fano is not known to fly combat aircraft, so it is unclear exactly what threat the FK-2000s are meant to stop.
