General Dynamics gets $136M to upgrade Stryker power system

Report Content

The U.S. Army has awarded General Dynamics Land Systems a $135.9 million contract modification that sets prices for buying complete retrofit kits for the Stryker armored vehicle’s Enhanced Power Distribution Unit Version 2, raising the total value of the contract to $162.4 million, the Department of War announced on Oct. 26.

The kits are designed to be installed on Strykers already in service, but the contract announcement did not say how many kits the Army will buy, which Stryker variants or units will receive them, or when installation will begin. Work locations and funding will be set with each individual order under the contract, which runs until Aug. 8, 2030.

A power distribution unit manages how electrical power from the vehicle’s generator and batteries is routed to its systems, from radios and computers to sensors and weapon stations, and the demand for that power has grown as the U.S. Army has added new equipment to the eight-wheeled Stryker. Neither the Army nor General Dynamics has published details of what the Version 2 unit changes compared with earlier designs.

Only one company was asked to bid, and General Dynamics, the Stryker’s manufacturer, submitted the only offer. Army Contracting Command at Detroit Arsenal in Michigan is managing the contract.

The award adds to a steady flow of Stryker work for the Sterling Heights, Michigan-based company. In August, the U.S. Army awarded General Dynamics a $54.3 million contract for field-level maintenance and sustainment support for the Stryker fleet running through 2031. The service received its first Strykers with new or upgraded double-V hulls, which deflect mine and roadside bomb blasts away from the crew, in March 2025, and in December 2025 it tested an upgraded Stryker armed with a 30 mm autocannon at Yakima Training Center in Washington.

The Stryker serves as the main combat and combat-support vehicle of the U.S. Army’s Stryker Brigade Combat Teams and comes in variants for carrying infantry, reconnaissance, command and control, medical evacuation, engineering, mortar fire and anti-tank missions.
