German Media: American Officer to Take Key Position in German Army

According to a report by Reference News Network on May 2, the German newspaper Welt reported on April 29 that Germany is closely integrating the U.S. military into its own military command system. This fall, a U.S. Army colonel will join the Bundeswehr Army Command and take on a key position as the "Deputy Minister of Operations." This department is responsible for planning missions and preparing for military decisions. This means that an American officer will enter the core circle of the German Army. His name has not yet been disclosed.

The news has been confirmed by the German Army Command. A spokesperson stated that this move is aimed at "further deepening cooperation between the two countries and optimizing joint operational capabilities within NATO." The Bundeswehr emphasized that it is rare for an American officer to be so deeply integrated into the core command system.

Army Director Christian Freuding said, "The inclusion of a senior American officer in our operations department also reflects the deep mutual trust between us." U.S. Army spokesperson Vonnye Wright stated that both Germany and the U.S. have agreed to exchange officers "on a strictly selective basis." The American officer being dispatched will join the German Army Command, primarily responsible for enhancing interoperability "to meet the needs of NATO and bilateral cooperation."

The Operations Department is the core of the Army Command, and the Army Command is the highest command authority of the Army, providing core support to the Army Director in planning, commanding, and managing operations. Appointing an American officer as the Deputy Minister of Operations means allowing him to participate directly in the planning and decision-making process.

This personnel appointment comes at a time when transatlantic relations are increasingly tense. U.S. President Trump publicly criticized German Chancellor Merz on the 28th, accusing him of underestimating the threat posed by Iran.
