Germany and Poland Sign Agreement to Expand Defense Cooperation
Reference News Network, June 20 According to a report from Germany's ARD website on June 17, German Defense Minister Pistorius visited Warsaw on the 17th and signed an agreement with Polish Defense Minister Kownacki-Kamysz, reaffirming the cooperation between Germany and Poland in the field of defense.
Pistorius stated, "Through this new agreement, we are not only taking into account the new realities of security policy but also opening a new chapter in the history of our close friendship." He pointed out that both countries will jointly bear the responsibility for maintaining European security.
Poland shares a direct border with Russia and Belarus and is particularly affected by the new security situation in Europe. The country has invested 5% of its GDP in defense. Kownacki-Kamysz stated, "For Poland, the enemy is in the East, not the West."
This agreement between Germany and Poland expands military cooperation in multiple areas, including cybersecurity, space, research, Baltic security, infrastructure protection, and maritime traffic safety. Pistorius stated, "We are also jointly committed to extending NATO's pipeline system to the Baltic states." In addition, military logistics between the two countries will become more convenient, "reducing bureaucratic procedures."
On NATO's eastern flank, the two countries are also cooperating. Pistorius said, "Starting this summer, the Bundeswehr engineers will participate in the construction of defensive fortifications on the border with Russia and Belarus—'Eastern Shield.'
On the same day, symbolically, the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Germany and Poland celebrated its 35th anniversary. To mark this occasion, Berlin held a German-Polish forum and a meeting of the two foreign ministers. In Warsaw, the focus was on defense.
