On the 10th, at the opening ceremony of the Berlin International Aerospace Exhibition, Merz stated that he hopes to ensure that Germany and other European countries maintain their status as global aviation powerhouses with the new aviation strategy approved by the cabinet.
The German Chancellor called on Airbus to vigorously develop its production base in Hamburg. He said that Germany will not only significantly increase its investment in military aviation but will also allocate 35 billion euros in the coming years to build space defense capabilities. Merz expressed his hope that the German company Isar Aerospace will successfully launch a rocket in June.
The new aviation strategy of the German government sets a confident goal: to make Germany a leading aviation center with a sustainable, safe, and competitive aviation industry. Merz, along with German Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder and Economic Minister Katrin Reiche, pointed out that the German aviation industry is expected to grow by 19% by 2025, with the number of employees reaching a record 130,000.
Merz noted that in the next 20 years, 40,000 aircraft will be produced globally. He stated that the aviation industry is "currently one of the fastest-growing sectors in Germany and Europe."
For the first time, civil aviation and military aviation have been integrated into Germany's aviation strategy. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said, "We are thus creating synergies." He mentioned that innovations in one area can be quickly transferred to another; this helps enhance the readiness of the Bundeswehr.
The German Chancellor emphasized to Germany's French partners in the aviation industry that the increasing investments from the German side must be reflected in the construction of production bases; therefore, the Franco-German joint venture Airbus must vigorously develop its production base in Hamburg.
