In Memory! "July 1 Medal" Recipient, Veteran Wang Zhanshan Passes Away

According to the family of Wang Zhanshan, the "July 1 Medal" recipient and a battle-hardened veteran, Comrade Wang Zhanshan passed away in Anyang on February 26 at 22:34 due to ineffective medical treatment, at the age of 97.

On the morning of March 2 at 8:00, a farewell ceremony for Comrade Wang Zhanshan was held in Anyang. In accordance with his wishes, his ashes were buried in the Longyu Garden Cemetery in Anyang County, forever accompanying the land he once protected.

At 21:00 on July 13, 1953, the final battle of the Korean War, the Battle of Jincheng, began. At that time, Wang Zhanshan was the squad leader of the 3rd platoon of the 7th company of the 404th regiment of the 135th division of the Volunteer Army. In this battle, he led his comrades to hold their position for 4 days and nights, repelling the enemy's attacks 38 times.

For a full 4 days and nights, Wang Zhanshan and his comrades repelled over 30 enemy counterattacks, killing more than 400 enemy soldiers. When the brother company came to relieve them, there were less than 10 men left in the entire company, all severely injured.

After being sent to the hospital, Wang Zhanshan was in a coma for several days and nights, and it was only through the full efforts of the medical staff that he was pulled back from the brink of death. Upon waking, the first question Wang Zhanshan asked was, "I didn't lose the position, did I?" The military doctor counted the wounds on him and said, "You are really lucky; you survived with 38 holes in you!"

After the war, Wang Zhanshan was awarded first-class merit by the leadership of the Volunteer Army and was honored with the title of "Second-Class Hero." His 7th company and 3rd platoon were also awarded collective first-class and second-class merit, respectively.
