Israeli Military Strikes Southern Lebanon
Xinhua News Agency, Jerusalem, May 24 (Reporters Pang Xinyi and Chen Junqing) According to a report from Israel's Channel 12 on the 24th, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out strikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon on the same day.
An IDF spokesperson earlier that day issued a warning via social media, stating that the IDF was prepared to launch airstrikes against Hezbollah and urged residents of 10 villages and towns in southern Lebanon to evacuate. The spokesperson stated that the IDF was "forced to take military action" due to Hezbollah's "violation of the ceasefire agreement."
With U.S. mediation, Israel and Lebanon held two rounds of ambassador-level talks in Washington on April 14 and 23. A temporary ceasefire began on April 17 for a duration of 10 days, and U.S. President Trump announced on April 23 that the ceasefire would be extended for three weeks. On May 15, Lebanon stated that the third round of talks held in Washington among Lebanon, the U.S., and Israel had achieved "diplomatic progress favorable to Lebanon," and all parties agreed to extend the ceasefire for another 45 days.
Since the ceasefire took effect, the IDF has continued to launch attacks on the grounds of Hezbollah's violations of the ceasefire agreement, and has dismantled and destroyed what it calls "Hezbollah military infrastructure" in the areas of southern Lebanon it occupies.
