Japan's Ministry of Defense is Considering Introducing AI Systems from American Companies

According to recent news from Japan, the Japanese Ministry of Defense has determined a policy to introduce artificial intelligence systems in "command and control," and is currently discussing the introduction of military AI systems from American companies.

Sources indicate that, according to government-related individuals, the Japanese government is currently focusing on introducing the "Maven AI System" from the American company Palantir Technologies. However, there has been ongoing demand within the Japanese government and ruling party to adopt domestically produced AI systems. Therefore, relevant parties are also considering a plan to combine both options or eventually replace it with a Japanese-made AI system in the future.

During the Japan-U.S. joint command post exercise held from January to February this year, Palantir Technologies' AI system was used. However, the specific details of the exercise have not been made public.

It is reported that several government-related individuals have stated that the "Three Security Documents" planned to be revised by the Kishi administration within the year will also include the application of AI in command and control decision support systems, and plans to include some related costs in the budget request for fiscal year 2027.
