Lavrov: Russia Will Respond to Greenland's "Militarization" with Military Means

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov stated on the 11th that, if Greenland is "militarized," Russia will take sufficient countermeasures, including military means.

Lavrov spoke in the State Duma (the lower house of parliament) that day, saying: "Of course, once Greenland is militarized or military capabilities targeting Russia are established, we will take sufficient countermeasures, including military technical means."

U.S. President Trump has repeatedly claimed he wants to acquire this Danish autonomous territory, asserting that Greenland is crucial to U.S. national security, and plans to deploy the "Iron Dome" missile defense system on the island. Russian Presidential Press Secretary Peskov has responded that the Russian military will "closely monitor and analyze" U.S. intentions.

In an interview broadcast on the online platform "Empatia Manuchi" on the 11th, Lavrov said that for a long time, NATO has attempted to turn the Arctic region into a battlefield. Against this backdrop, resolving the status of Greenland is unlikely to change the overall situation in the Arctic region. "Militarization is advancing, and Russia's indisputable rights in the Northern Sea Route are being challenged. (NATO) has provoked in this region multiple times... However, I believe that once those planning these actions realize the serious consequences of doing so, such provocations will quickly decrease."

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov pointed out on the 3rd of this month that all developments surrounding Greenland stem from the U.S. desire to establish hegemony, and Russia will ensure its national security under any circumstances.
