According to a report by Reference News Network on March 29, Axios reported on March 25 that Lockheed Martin's Chief Technology Officer Craig Martell predicted at the Axios AI + DC Summit on March 25 that future wars will involve collaboration between humans and machines.

As the military expands the use of autonomous weapons, the debate over when and whether to trust these systems, and who should be held accountable for errors or failures, is intensifying.

Martell said, "I hope we really focus on human-machine collaboration because... I don't think large-scale statistics can turn us into cognitive machines."

He stated that it is the responsibility of humans to train the artificial intelligence systems they plan to deploy, identifying their errors and limitations.

He said, "Then you can make a rational decision: do you want to take responsibility? Do you want to deploy that device? Do you want to deploy that platform?"

He also said, "I choose to use it. If it goes wrong, then it's my responsibility."

Martell previously served as the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer at the U.S. Department of Defense and is well-versed in how the military applies artificial intelligence to its classified systems.

The U.S. Army has just received its first unmanned "Black Hawk" helicopter, which can operate independently or under remote monitoring from a secure off-site location.
