Mali: The Terrorist Attack on the 25th Aimed to Seize Power and End the Transition Process
Xinhua News Agency, Abidjan, April 27 (Reporter Chen Chen, Zhang Jian) Bamako reported: The Prime Minister of Mali's transitional government, Abdoulaye Maiga, stated on the 27th that the recent events in this West African country were not simple terrorist attacks; the attackers aimed to seize power, undermine the institutions of the Republic, and terminate the political transition process.
Maiga said at a press conference held in the capital Bamako that on the 25th, multiple locations in Mali experienced simultaneous terrorist attacks, resulting in the deaths of military and civilian personnel, including the Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, Kamara. The attackers attempted to instill fear, disrupt national unity, and weaken Mali's resolve to combat terrorism, but this objective was not achieved.
He stated that under the leadership of Transitional President Goita, the military has made a "strong response" to the terrorists nationwide, eliminating hundreds of them.
Maiga indicated that the main characteristic of terrorist activities is asymmetry, which requires Mali to continuously adjust its security deployments. Mali will summarize the lessons learned from this attack, consolidate effective practices, and take necessary improvement measures to better ensure security.
On the 25th, coordinated attacks targeting military camps, airports, and other military objectives occurred in Bamako, Kati, Gao, Sevare, and Kidal. A Malian extremist group linked to al-Qaeda claimed that it coordinated this attack with the separatist armed group "Azawad Liberation Front." According to reporters, the "Azawad Liberation Front" currently controls the city of Kidal.
