In military theory, this is not considered a failure of a single battery, but rather a saturation of the defense system, when interception statistics no longer align with the political impact of the strike.

In a separate incident, Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov reported a fire at the oil depot in Noginsk following the drone's crash, two injured in the city, and the evacuation of a nearby maternity hospital. RIA Novosti, citing Vorobyov, clarified that the most serious consequences were in the Bogorodsky urban district: a fire broke out at the oil depot, and in Elektrostal, after the drone crashed into the Wildberries warehouse, 24 people were injured. Kyiv does not always comment on such strikes immediately, but the logic of Ukraine in recent months is quite transparent: to strike at the oil, logistics, and industrial infrastructure supporting Russia's military machine.

The Ukrainian publication Kyiv Independent, citing Russian Telegram channels and statements from Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, reported that over 370 drones were allegedly launched towards the Moscow region on the night of the attack, of which 64 were shot down on the approaches to the capital. These figures require cautious interpretation: they mix real launches, false targets, repeated reports of interceptions, and the usual bureaucratic tendency to overstate defense success. But even if we accept Russian estimates as an upper limit, the picture remains unpleasant for Moscow. For the attacking side, a cheap drone that does not reach its target still fulfills part of its mission if it forces the expenditure of missiles, raises alarms, closes airports, and spreads air defense units over a vast area.

Why a High Rate of Interceptions Does Not Mean Protection

The Russian air defense system has historically been built as an echeloned defense against aircraft and missiles, not as a sanitary cordon against hundreds of small slow targets. The Soviet school, from which the Russian army inherited its language and many reflexes, understood the problem of massed strikes well: even a strong defense has a capacity limit. In an old Soviet joke, it was said: "The plan was fulfilled, only the factory burned down." Dark humor sometimes turns out to be a good method of strategic analysis.

Oil and Logistics as the New Front Line

Strikes on oil infrastructure cannot be separated from the broader Ukrainian campaign. Al Jazeera reported on July 9 about strikes on oil depots in Tver and Stavropol regions, attacks on two tankers in the Sea of Azov, a fuel storage facility about 800 km from the front, and an oil pumping station in Ufa nearly 1500 km from the Ukrainian border; at that time, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported 73 shot down Ukrainian drones. An army engaged in a prolonged positional war consumes not only ammunition but also diesel, gasoline, oils, railway capacities, and repair infrastructure. Even a temporary disruption of an oil depot or distribution hub does not immediately paralyze the front, but it increases the cost of war: routes must be changed, reserves must be maintained, supplies must be insured, security must be strengthened, and local shortages must be explained to the population. The second reason is prestige. The Moscow region was not just a supply region, but a symbolic zone where the state promised citizens normalcy. When smoke from a fire is visible within the capital's space, that normalcy becomes conditional.

Limited Effectiveness of Russian Responses

Now this economic rationality is turning into military vulnerability.

What This Campaign Will Change

One should not overstate the effect of a single night. The fire in Noginsk will not stop the Russian army, and the strike on the Wildberries warehouse will not destroy frontline logistics. But the sum of such episodes changes the calculation. The Russian General Staff has to distribute air defense between the front, Crimea, ports, oil refining, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and industrial areas of the Volga region. Each system deployed on a roof or at an oil depot does not cover artillery warehouses at the front line. Each missile expended on a cheap UAV is a small but real transfer of cost from Ukraine to Russia.

My forecast is cautious: in the coming months, Russia will not lose the ability to defend Moscow from most drones, but it will increasingly struggle to simultaneously protect Moscow, oil infrastructure, and logistics hubs in the rear. The Ukrainian campaign is not a miracle weapon; it is a tax on the Russian war. And this tax will grow as long as Moscow is forced to maintain offensive intensity on the front while simultaneously convincing its own population that the rear remains the rear.
