One robot, three jobs: firefighter, farmhand, and soldier

A Romanian robotics company says it has built a single platform that can fight wildfires, work construction sites, and operate as a counter-drone defense system, all from the same modular chassis.
Maximus Labs Romania, alongside its manufacturing arm Maximus Lab, describes the Max1 as a modular unmanned ground vehicle capable of switching between operational roles within minutes. CEO Alexandru Radulescu said on social media that operators using the platform continue to find new applications for it in the field, describing the response from teams as enthusiasm over how differently the same machine performs across different missions. In a separate post, Maximus Lab described Max1 as one of the most versatile unmanned ground vehicles currently in production, built around three primary configurations: emergency response and firefighting, construction and agricultural work, and a multi-role defense platform the company describes as capable of countering aerial and ground threats.
According to Maximus Lab, Max1 withstands temperatures up to 500 degrees Celsius (932 degrees Fahrenheit), carries a payload of up to 850 kilograms (1,874 lb), and is rated for operation in toxic and radiological environments, with the operator maintaining full control from a safe remote distance throughout. The company said these capabilities are powered by onboard artificial intelligence systems designed to keep human operators out of direct danger during the platform’s most hazardous missions.
When The Defence Blog asked Maximus Lab for additional detail on the platform’s military applications, the company said Max1 is NATO-approved and currently operational in the United States, France, and Poland, with further testing underway in Romania, the United Kingdom, Germany, India, and Morocco.
On performance, Maximus Lab said Max1 runs for more than four hours on dual sodium-ion batteries, reaches a top speed of 16 kilometers per hour (9.9 mph), and offers power output the company can scale depending on customer and mission requirements. The company also described its manufacturing approach as centered on supply chain security, stating that Max1 is produced entirely within the European Union with two exceptions, American-made communications equipment and NVIDIA Jetson processing modules, and that no component sourced from China is used anywhere in the platform.
Maximus Lab said Max1’s modularity extends to a wide range of interchangeable payloads. For defense applications, the company said the platform can integrate remote weapon stations built around 12.7mm machine guns and grenade launchers, along with low-altitude radar, electronic warfare and interceptor equipment, and acoustic detection and recognition systems. For logistics and support roles, the company listed communications relay stations, signal repeaters, power generators, mine-clearing and mine-laying attachments, casualty evacuation kits, and firefighting water cannons among the available modules.
To maintain command and control in contested electromagnetic environments, Maximus Lab said Max1 uses a Motorola and Silvus Sentinel communications system providing a secure operating range of 15 to 25 kilometers (9.3 to 15.5 miles), supplemented by standard GPS and Starlink satellite connectivity for extended global reach.
On autonomy, the company said the base Max1 platform ships with an NVIDIA Jetson Orin processing module supporting follow-me, push, and return-to-home functions, along with a sensor suite including AI-enhanced cameras, infrared and thermal imaging, LiDAR, and night vision equipment. Maximus Lab said compatible remote weapon stations carry their own separate Jetson Orin modules, and when connected to the base vehicle, form what the company calls an AI factory capable of autonomously detecting, recognizing, and tracking targets at distances of approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).
Asked specifically about safeguards governing weapons engagement, Maximus Lab described a requirement for human authorization before any weapon fires.
“The weapon station can autonomously detect, recognize, and track targets at distances of approx. 5 km. However, as a crucial safeguard, engagement strictly requires a ‘human-in-the-loop’ (manual operator authorization),” the company said.
On maintenance, Maximus Lab said the company supports Max1 with remote software updates, system diagnostics, and troubleshooting capabilities, allowing technical issues to be addressed from anywhere in the world without requiring a technician on site.
Maximus Lab framed the platform’s broader purpose in terms that extend beyond a single product line.
“The future of defense, emergency response, and industry isn’t about human sacrifice, it’s about leveraging intelligent technology to its fullest potential,” the company said.
