Pentagon selects Amazon for Air Force Cloud One program

The U.S. Air Force has awarded Amazon Web Services a $581.3 million contract to provide cloud services for the Air Force’s Cloud One program, according to a contract announcement released this week.

The contract was issued by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, and covers the delivery of Amazon cloud services in support of Cloud One and its authorized users across the Air Force enterprise. Work will be performed at contractor-designated facilities across the continental United States and is scheduled to run through December 7, 2028.

According to the contract notice, the award was made as a sole-source acquisition. Fiscal year 2026 operations and maintenance funds totaling $3.49 million were obligated at the time of award, with additional funding expected to be allocated over the life of the contract as requirements are executed.

Cloud One is the Air Force’s enterprise cloud platform, designed to provide secure, scalable computing environments for weapons systems, command-and-control applications, intelligence processing, and business systems. The platform supports classified and unclassified workloads and is used by multiple Department of the Air Force organizations.

The Air Force has positioned Cloud One as a core element of its digital modernization strategy, enabling faster software development, data sharing, and deployment of new capabilities across operational units. The program is intended to standardize cloud access while maintaining security controls required for military operations.

Amazon Web Services has been a long-standing provider of cloud services to U.S. defense and intelligence agencies, supporting a range of mission systems and enterprise IT platforms. Under the new contract, AWS will continue to provide infrastructure, storage, and computing services tailored to Air Force operational and enterprise needs.

The Air Force did not disclose specific systems or missions that will be supported under the contract, citing standard procurement practice for enterprise IT services. However, Cloud One is widely used to host applications supporting aircraft maintenance, logistics planning, cyber operations, and data analytics.

The contract award comes as the Department of the Air Force continues to shift mission systems toward cloud-based architectures to improve resilience, scalability, and interoperability across domains. Officials have previously said that cloud environments are necessary to support data-intensive operations and to enable rapid software updates for operational platforms.

Hanscom Air Force Base oversees many of the Air Force’s major digital and command-and-control programs, including enterprise IT, networking, and battle management systems. The base serves as a central hub for acquisition and lifecycle management of advanced digital capabilities.

Under the current contract, AWS will provide continuous cloud services through the end of 2028, supporting both ongoing operations and future digital transformation initiatives within the Air Force.
