Poland deploys MiG-29 fighters to intercept Russian Il-20

Poland’s Operational Command of the Armed Forces said that on Friday, March 13, 2026, a pair of Polish Air Force MiG-29 fighter jets intercepted and escorted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea.

The interception reflects ongoing efforts by NATO members to monitor and control airspace activity near allied territory, particularly as Russian military aircraft continue surveillance flights in international airspace without standard flight transparency measures.

According to a statement from Poland’s Operational Command, the Russian Il-20 aircraft was conducting its ninth reconnaissance mission of the year in international airspace over the Baltic Sea. The aircraft was flying without a filed flight plan and with its transponder turned off.

Polish MiG-29 fighters carried out the interception, conducted visual identification of the aircraft, and escorted it away from the area of responsibility. The Russian aircraft did not violate Polish airspace during the incident.

The Operational Command stated that the mission was completed efficiently and safely, citing the readiness of quick reaction alert forces, pilot experience, and the performance of Poland’s air defense system.

“Thanks to the high readiness of the alert forces, the experience of the pilots, and the efficient operation of the air defense system, the task was carried out quickly, professionally, and safely,” the command said.

The statement added that Polish armed forces maintain continuous readiness to respond to potential threats in national airspace.

“Soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces watch over the security of the Polish sky every day, carrying out their service with full commitment, and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland remain in constant readiness to respond to any threats to our airspace,” the command said.

The Il-20 is a Russian electronic intelligence and reconnaissance aircraft used to collect signals and monitor military activity. Such aircraft are frequently deployed near NATO airspace to gather intelligence on exercises, troop movements, and radar systems.

In this case, the aircraft’s use of international airspace without an active transponder and without submitting a flight plan increased the need for interception, as such conditions can complicate air traffic management and identification procedures.

Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) missions are a standard NATO air policing measure, requiring fighter aircraft to scramble on short notice to intercept unidentified or non-compliant aircraft near allied airspace.

The interception over the Baltic Sea follows a pattern of similar encounters in northern Europe. Recently, Norwegian F-35 fighter jets intercepted and identified a Russian Il-20M reconnaissance aircraft flying in international airspace near Finnmark on two consecutive days.

Those interceptions took place during NATO’s Cold Response 2026 exercise, where allied forces were conducting large-scale training operations while monitoring Russian aerial activity in nearby regions.

Russian reconnaissance flights near NATO airspace are not uncommon and are generally conducted in accordance with international law when remaining outside national airspace. However, flying without a transponder or flight plan often prompts interception to ensure safety and situational awareness.
