Poland’s Abrams tank order nears the finish line

General Dynamics Land Systems will complete deliveries of Poland’s 250 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks by the end of 2026, the company said, finishing the order in under 24 months.

Poland signed the contract for the tanks in April 2022, alongside Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with the deal valued at $4.75 billion. Beyond the 250 tanks, the agreement includes 26 M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicles, 17 M1074/M1110 Joint Assault Bridges, ammunition, and a training and logistics support package. The U.S. Army separately announced its own $1.148 billion foreign military sales award to General Dynamics for the tanks in July 2022.

The M1A2 SEPv3 is the newest production version of the Abrams, General Dynamics’ main battle tank that has served as the backbone of the U.S. Army’s armored forces for decades. Compared with earlier Abrams variants, the SEPv3 carries upgraded armor, improved fire-control systems and communications equipment, and a design meant to make it easier to add future upgrades without a full rebuild.

Poland received an initial batch of 28 older M1A2 SEPv2 tanks in 2022 to begin training Polish crews while deliveries of the newer SEPv3 version were still being produced. Poland’s Deputy Minister of National Defence, Paweł Bejda, confirmed another shipment of 19 SEPv3 tanks had arrived in the country in May 2025, with deliveries continuing in batches since. The tanks are being fielded with Poland’s 18th Mechanized Division, based in eastern Poland near the country’s border with Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave.

At over 60 metric tons (66 tons), the SEPv3 will be the heaviest tank ever fielded by the Polish military once deliveries wrap up. General Dynamics is displaying an Abrams SEPv3 outdoors at the MSPO defense exhibition in Kielce, Poland, which runs through September 11.

Poland’s Abrams purchase sits alongside a separate, larger order for South Korean K2 tanks and domestically built equipment as part of the country’s broader military buildup since 2022, one of the most extensive modernization efforts underway among NATO’s eastern-flank members.
