Russia has found a brutally simple way to make Ukraine's air-defence problem worse: make the cheap drone faster. The result is not a wonder weapon. It is a mass-production problem with a jet engine attached.
BBC Verify's analysis of Ukrainian Air Force data found that Russia used its upgraded, jet-powered Geran drones every day throughout August 2026. Ukrainian officials told the BBC that attacks involving the faster variants rose from 350 in June to 1,600 in July and 2,800 in August. In five August night raids, the jet-powered drones outnumbered the older, slower models. That is a change in the character of the campaign, not merely a larger number on a spreadsheet.
The speed advantage is the point
The Geran family is Russia's name for its domestically produced version of Iran's Shahed attack drone. The original design was valuable because it was cheap, long-ranged and expendable. Its piston engine also gave defenders time to hear, track and engage it. The new turbojet-powered versions reportedly cruise above 300 mph, according to BBC reporting, making them substantially harder to intercept during the final approach.
That matters because Ukraine's defensive architecture is layered but not infinite. A large drone raid can be met by mobile fire teams, electronic warfare, machine guns and short-range missiles, with expensive surface-to-air interceptors reserved for the most dangerous targets. A faster drone compresses every part of that sequence: detection, classification, hand-off and firing. A weapon that was previously a manageable nuisance can become a brief, expensive sprint from radar contact to impact.
Dr Marina Miron of King's College London told the BBC that the speed of the new drones is the central reason they are more difficult to stop. Ukrainian military intelligence has also said that Kyiv needs interceptor missiles capable of matching the drones' speed. The admission is revealing. Ukraine is not asking only for more launchers; it needs a different cost-and-performance equation.
Russia is attacking the economics of defence
The obvious mistake is to judge the Geran by the destructive power of an individual airframe. Russia's advantage comes from the raid. A low-cost drone can force the defender to reveal radar positions, expend ammunition and keep crews awake. Add a faster variant to the formation and Ukraine must decide whether to spend a high-value interceptor on an airframe that may cost a fraction as much.
This is the same exhaustion logic that has defined Russia's broader strike campaign. Moscow is not required to penetrate every layer. It needs to create enough uncertainty that defenders either waste scarce missiles or let some targets through. The 2,800 August figure therefore matters less as a record than as evidence of a production and employment cycle that is becoming routine.
There is a second pressure point: geography. On 2 September, according to Ukrainian statements reported by the BBC, a Russian strike killed at least 12 people and wounded 20, including railway workers in Kyiv. A separate drone crossing into Moldovan airspace delayed President Volodymyr Zelensky's flight from Chisinau for roughly an hour. Moldova said the aircraft came from the direction of Ukraine and fell about 160 kilometres from the airport. The incident caused an airspace shutdown even though the drone did not hit the presidential aircraft.
That is what inexpensive drones buy Moscow beyond physical damage. They export air-defence anxiety across borders. Moldova is not a NATO member, but every accidental or deliberate overflight forces neighbouring governments to consider whether their civilian aviation and critical infrastructure can operate normally beside the war.
Ukraine's countermeasure problem
Ukraine claimed earlier in 2026 that it was intercepting 94% of long-range drones. Even if that figure is broadly accurate, it does not mean the defence is comfortable. A high percentage against a growing and increasingly varied raid can still leave unacceptable numbers reaching cities, railways and power infrastructure.
Kyiv's answer cannot be a single replacement missile. It needs a cheaper interceptor layer that can handle speed, navigation resilience and saturation, while preserving Patriot and other high-end systems for ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Electronic warfare remains essential, but a drone that arrives faster gives jammers less time to disrupt it and creates more risk if the navigation system has backup modes. The practical answer is a mix of passive sensors, rapid-fire guns, inexpensive air-to-air interceptors and better integration between civilian and military radars.
Western governments should pay attention to the word “daily.” Supplying a handful of premium missiles for spectacular raids is politically easy. Funding the dull architecture that defeats thousands of relatively cheap airframes is harder. It means stockpiles, maintenance, distributed sensors and a production line for interceptors that policymakers cannot unveil at a summit with a single dramatic photograph.
The uncomfortable conclusion
Russia's jet-powered Geran campaign does not prove that Ukrainian air defence is collapsing. It proves something more demanding: the defence is being forced to evolve at the same speed as the attack. Moscow has turned a familiar Shahed threat into a faster, more scalable test of ammunition, reaction time and alliance logistics.
The next metric to watch is not simply how many drones Russia launches or how many Ukraine intercepts. It is the cost per successful interception, the share of jet-powered variants in each raid and whether Ukraine receives an interceptor designed for this speed class. If those numbers move in the wrong direction through the autumn, Europe's air-defence pledges will look generous on paper and inadequate over Kyiv.
The uncomfortable judgement is straightforward: Russia does not need to win the drone war outright. It only needs to make defending Ukraine more expensive than supporting it.
