The U.S. Says "Willing to Negotiate," Iran: No Talks Without Conditions Met
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, September 15 - Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, emphasized on the 15th that Iran will not negotiate with the United States if the conditions proposed by Iran are not met.
Rezaei posted on social media, saying: "Don't let the mixed signals released by the U.S. president distract you - first saying 'no negotiations', then saying 'we are willing to negotiate'."
Rezaei wrote that the situation regarding oil and the Strait of Hormuz has changed. "There will be no negotiations until Iran's conditions are met," he emphasized.
U.S. President Trump defended his Iran policy in multiple posts on social media on the 14th. Trump stated that he has an "open" attitude towards negotiating with Iran and mentioned that the U.S. is providing "assistance" for oil transportation in the Strait of Hormuz, and that countries should provide "escort compensation" to the U.S.
Earlier this month, Trump claimed that the U.S.-Iran conflict would "immediately end" after the November midterm elections in the U.S., and that resuming negotiations with Iran "is not something we are currently considering."
The U.S. and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding in mid-June, but the memorandum was soon undermined after it took effect.
