According to the current schedule, this 40,000-ton, hull number 51 giant is expected to be delivered to the PLA Navy by the end of 2026. It is not only one of the largest amphibious assault ships in the world but, more importantly, it represents a completely new combat concept: unmanned amphibious operations.
Electromagnetic Catapult Installed: Amphibious Ship Gains Fixed-Wing Launch Capability

While 6 drones may not seem like many, they hold unique value in an amphibious landing scenario:

From Type 075 to Type 076: Why Such Rapid Iteration?

Number of catapults. Current publicly available photos show that the Type 076 has only 1-2 catapults, far fewer than the 3 on the Fujian Ship. This limits its launch rate—despite having 6 drones, it would be difficult to launch them quickly and simultaneously.
Additionally, the performance of the GJ-21 drone itself remains a mystery. What is its stealth capability? Can it penetrate Taiwan's air defense network? Does its payload and endurance meet combat requirements? These questions currently have no answers.
Not a Carrier Replacement, But a Dedicated Platform for Amphibious Operations
It is important to clarify that the Type 076 is not a "mini aircraft carrier," nor is it intended to replace conventional carriers like the Fujian Ship. Its role is as a support ship for amphibious operations: providing close air support, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare for landing forces during amphibious assaults.
In the Taiwan Strait scenario, the typical operational process for the Type 076 may look like this:
- Standby 50-100 kilometers off the western coast of Taiwan
- Launch GJ-21 drones for continuous reconnaissance of landing positions
- As landing forces initiate their assault, drones provide real-time fire guidance
- Upon discovering enemy reinforcements or artillery positions, immediately deploy precision munitions
- Coordinate with Type 075 amphibious ships and Type 071 landing platform dock ships to form a "three-dimensional landing" system
The core advantage of this operational model is "flexibility"—drones can remain airborne for extended periods, ready to respond to ground forces' fire support requests at any time, unlike manned aircraft that are limited by pilot fatigue and fuel constraints.
Unanswered Questions: What is the Production Capacity of the GJ-21?
The commissioning of the Type 076 will give the PLA the world's first "drone carrier" fleet. However, a key question remains unanswered: what is the production capacity for the GJ-21, this large stealth drone?
If 3 Type 076 ships are built (currently only the first ship, the Sichuan Ship, is under construction, with future plans unclear), each equipped with 6 GJ-21 drones, then at least 18-20 drones (including backups) would be needed. Adding in training, attrition, and technological iterations, the total demand could reach 30-40 drones.
China has already matured in the mass production of medium and small drones (such as the Wing Loong and Rainbow series), but for stealth drones like the GJ-21, which involve complex materials, avionics, and AI autonomous control technologies, production bottlenecks may exist in engines, stealth coatings, and onboard electronic equipment.
What is worth paying attention to is not the Type 076 itself, but whether the unmanned combat system it represents can truly form combat capability—this requires the maturity of a complete technological chain including drones, shipborne command systems, data links, and AI algorithms. From this perspective, the real test for the Type 076 is not whether it can be delivered by the end of 2026, but whether it can achieve combat capability by 2027-2028.
