UN Secretary-General Welcomes Ceasefire Announcement by Lebanon and Israel

On June 4, Xinhua News Agency reported from the United Nations (Reporter Shang Xuqian) that UN Secretary-General Guterres issued a statement through spokesperson Dujarric on the 4th, welcoming the announcement of a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, and urging all parties to fully comply with the ceasefire agreement and fulfill their obligations under international law.

The statement said that Guterres welcomed the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel and reiterated the UN's support for all efforts aimed at ending hostilities and alleviating the suffering of people on both sides of the border.

The statement further noted that Guterres once again urged Hezbollah and other non-state actors to respect the Lebanese government's decision to control the entire territory; urged Israel to respect Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to withdraw its troops from Lebanese territory. The UN supports all diplomatic efforts to strengthen the ceasefire and promote the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Guterres hopes that negotiations can continue and that the ceasefire agreement can contribute to achieving lasting peace and stability.

Representatives from Lebanon, Israel, and the United States held the fourth high-level trilateral meeting in Washington from the 2nd to the 3rd. The three parties issued a joint statement on the 3rd stating that Lebanon and Israel agreed to a ceasefire, provided that Hezbollah completely stops its attacks and fully withdraws from the area south of the Litani River.
