Reference News Network reported on August 4 According to the Belgian website "Military Assessment" on July 28, as the battlefield experience in Ukraine continues to reveal the increasingly severe threat posed by armed drones, the U.S. Army's efforts to accelerate the development of Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) are entering a new phase.

Through the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) Center, the Army is expanding its collaboration with the defense industry to rapidly identify, assess, and refine technologies capable of addressing the increasingly complex drone threats.

In May of this year, significant progress was made during the "2026 Inspector" operation held at Fort Hill, Virginia. This was the first small-scale C-UAS assessment organized by the DEVCOM C5ISR Center. Over a week and a half, 17 defense companies evaluated emerging non-kinetic counter-drone technologies under near-combat conditions.

The urgency of this initiative reflects the changing nature of modern warfare. The conflict in Ukraine has shown that inexpensive commercial quadcopters, first-person view (FPV) attack drones, and loitering munitions can locate artillery, strike armored vehicles, disrupt logistics lines, and threaten command posts at a cost far lower than traditional precision-guided munitions. The emergence of drone swarms further complicates operations, forcing defenders to detect, identify, and intercept multiple low-cost aerial threats from various directions.

These battlefield experiences have prompted the U.S. military to rethink its approach to developing counter-drone capabilities.

During the "2026 Inspector" operation, participants assessed a variety of technologies, including high-energy laser systems, radio frequency jammers, and intercept drones designed to physically destroy enemy drones. More than a dozen different drones were tested against these systems through reconnaissance missions, direct attack modes, and coordinated swarm attack scenarios.
