U.S. Army orders more of its M110 sniper systems

The U.S. Army has handed Knight’s Armament Company, run by founder Charles Reed Knight Jr., a new five-year deal worth nearly $50 million to keep building M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper Systems.
The firm-fixed-price contract covers the rifle, its variants, accessories, spare parts, special tools and training, and runs through September 10, 2031.
Only one company bid, and Knight’s Armament won it, a pattern the Army has followed with the M110 for years. Army Contracting Command in Newark, New Jersey, is overseeing the deal. Work locations and funding will be worked out order by order rather than locked in today.
The M110 fires 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition and grew out of Knight’s Armament’s SR-25 design, which the Army picked in 2007 after a competition. Unloaded, it weighs about 6.27 kg (13.8 lb). It sends a 175-grain round downrange at roughly 783 meters per second (2,570 feet per second) and can hit point targets out to about 800 meters (875 yards). Both the Army and Marine Corps have fielded the rifle, and it saw heavy use in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Army has spent nearly a decade trying to replace the M110 with something lighter. In 2016 it picked Heckler & Koch’s G28-based M110A1 for up to 3,643 rifles, in a deal worth up to $44.5 million, aimed at giving snipers a weapon that doesn’t stick out the way the longer M110 does. That didn’t end M110 purchases. The Army ordered more in 2018 for about $16.5 million, then kept buying under a five-year contract that ran through last September. This week’s award picks that supply line back up rather than closing it out.
The Army has also been buying M110s for Ukraine. In September 2025, it gave Knight’s Armament a separate $21 million contract to build M110 systems for Ukraine’s armed forces, paid for through the Ukraine Security Initiative and Partnership Capacity Building program, with deliveries due by January 30, 2027. Ukrainian special forces, the National Guard and International Legion volunteers have reportedly carried the rifle.
