U.S. Democratic Lawmakers Demand Government Disclose "Details of Israel's Nuclear Weapons"

On May 6, Xinhua News Agency reported from Washington that dozens of Democratic members of the House of Representatives recently sent a letter to Secretary of State Rubio, demanding that the Trump administration disclose "details of Israel's nuclear weapons program," stating that the government should not apply double standards on nuclear non-proliferation issues.

The report stated that Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro and 30 other Democrats wrote in the letter that public records "strongly and consistently" prove that Israel possesses nuclear weapons. After the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes against Iran on February 28, Israel's "nuclear facility in Dimona became a target for Iranian missiles."

The letter, dated May 4, stated that the U.S. is fighting alongside a country it refuses to formally acknowledge has a potential nuclear weapons program. In this context, the risks of misjudgment, escalation, and the use of nuclear weapons are not mere theoretical concerns. "Congress has a constitutional responsibility to fully understand the nuclear balance in the Middle East, the risks of escalation by any party in the conflict, and the plans and contingency measures the government has developed for such situations. We do not believe we have received that information."

These Democrats demanded that the U.S. hold the same "transparency standards" for Israel and other countries that may pursue nuclear weapons, and that the government should clarify "the details of Israel's nuclear program," including uranium enrichment capabilities, locations of fissile material production, and whether Israel has informed the U.S. about the red lines regarding the use of nuclear weapons in the current conflict with Iran.

U.S. media reported that the State Department did not respond to media requests for comments on this letter.

Israel has never confirmed or denied possessing nuclear weapons, and the U.S. has maintained a vague stance on Israel's nuclear program for decades. During an event at the White House in March, U.S. President Trump stated in response to a reporter's question that Israel "would never" use nuclear weapons against Iran.
