U.S. Media: U.S. Representatives to Visit Pakistan for Negotiations with Iranian Foreign Minister
On April 24, Xinhua News Agency reported from Washington (reporters Huang Qiang and Xu Jianmei) that U.S. President Trump will send presidential envoy Wittekov and son-in-law Kushner to Pakistan to participate in negotiations with Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif this weekend.
The report cited two U.S. officials as saying that since Iranian Islamic Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf will not attend, U.S. Vice President Pence currently has no plans to participate. However, if progress is made in the negotiations, Pence will head to the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, at any time.
Zarif stated on social media on the 24th that he will visit Pakistan, Oman, and Russia to coordinate bilateral affairs and consult on the developments in the regional situation. A source from the Pakistani military told Xinhua reporters that Zarif is expected to arrive in Islamabad later that day or early the next morning to discuss the prerequisites for negotiations between Iran and the U.S. If progress is made, the Iranian side is expected to engage in direct negotiations with U.S. representatives.
