U.S Navy awards $119 million contract for USS San Antonio repairs

Marine Hydraulics International LLC of Norfolk, Virginia, has been awarded a $119.4 million contract to maintain, modernize and repair the amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio (LPD 17), the U.S. Department of War announced Aug. 13, 2026.

The work falls under a fiscal 2027 selected restricted availability. That is a scheduled maintenance period set by the Chief of Naval Operations for work that keeps a ship in overhaul status while docked. If the Navy exercises contract options, the cumulative value of the award could reach $143.7 million.

The contract covers labor, supervision, equipment, production, testing, facilities and quality assurance needed to prepare for and complete the availability. Work will be performed in Norfolk and is scheduled for completion by July 2028.

USS San Antonio (LPD 17) is the first ship of the San Antonio-class amphibious transport docks. The U.S. Navy commissioned the vessel on Jan. 14, 2006, and it is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk. The class displaces roughly 25,000 tons full load, runs about 208 meters (684 feet) overall, and is built to carry Marines, landing craft, and MV-22 or helicopter aircraft for amphibious operations.

San Antonio returned to Norfolk on April 28, 2026, after an eight-and-a-half-month deployment with the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group and the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit. In the U.S. 4th Fleet area of operations, the ship supported Operation Southern Spear, conducted counter-narcotics and embassy reinforcement missions, and provided humanitarian assistance to Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa.

Marine Hydraulics International, which does business as MHI Ship Repair & Services, is a Norfolk-based contractor that performs repair and conversion work for the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command and the Maritime Administration. The company has handled comparable maintenance periods on other San Antonio-class ships in recent years. In 2024 it received a contract worth up to $147.2 million for the fiscal 2024 availability of USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19). In 2025 it won a contract worth up to $111.4 million for the fiscal 2025 availability of USS New York (LPD 21), a competition that drew three offers.

The Navy competed the San Antonio contract through full and open competition posted on the System for Award Management website. Four offers were received.

Funding obligated at the time of award totals $119.4 million and draws from three sources. Fiscal 2026 other procurement (Navy) funds account for $104.6 million, or 88% of the total. Fiscal 2026 operations and maintenance (Navy) funds account for $14.7 million, or 12%. Fiscal 2025 other procurement (Navy) funds make up the remainder, about $38,000, less than 1%. The $14.7 million in operations and maintenance funding will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
