U.S. Satellite Imaging Provider Suspends Release of Satellite Images from Middle East Conflict Areas
On April 4, Xinhua News Agency reported from San Francisco (Reporter Wu Xiaoling) that Planet Labs, a U.S. satellite imagery provider, announced on the same day that it would indefinitely suspend the release of satellite images related to Iran and conflict areas in the Middle East at the request of the U.S. government.
According to The New York Times, Planet Labs stated in an email sent to clients that, for "security and operational safety reasons," the U.S. government has requested all satellite imagery providers to indefinitely suspend the release of satellite images related to the conflict areas. The company indicated that this move is a further escalation of the 14-day delay in release measures it implemented last month. Under the arrangement, the company will suspend the release of relevant images taken after March 9 and expects this policy to last until the end of the current conflict.
The report stated that Planet Labs will implement "managed distribution" for some images based on specific circumstances in the future.
The U.S. Department of Defense declined to comment on whether the U.S. government requested satellite imagery providers to restrict content release.
The report also cited another satellite imagery provider, Maxar Technologies, which has implemented restrictions on satellite images and data for certain areas in the Middle East.
