Zahharova: Deploying the "Typhoon" Missile System in Japan is "Unacceptable"
On September 1, Xinhua News Agency reported from Vladivostok (reporters Wang Zuokui and Sun Ping) that Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zakharova stated that the deployment of the U.S. "Aegis" missile system on Japanese territory is "absolutely unacceptable" for Russia.
During a press conference held at the 11th Eastern Economic Forum, Zakharova pointed out that there are reports indicating that Japan, the United States, and Australia plan to conduct the "Eastern Shield" joint exercise from September 8 to 24 on Hokkaido Island and near the border of the Russian Federation, during which the U.S. land-based "Aegis" missile system, capable of launching medium-range missiles, will be used. The deployment of such weapons on Japanese territory, including under the pretext of military exercises, poses a threat to Russia's security and is "absolutely unacceptable" for Russia, which will take countermeasures to ensure its national defense security.
Zakharova stated that on August 31, Russia expressed its concerns regarding the Japan-U.S.-Australia joint military exercise to the Japanese embassy in Russia, clearly stating that provocative military actions in the Russian Far East border area are not permitted.
Zakharova noted that September 3 marks the anniversary of the victory over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II. Currently, the Japanese government stubbornly refuses to fully acknowledge the results of World War II, and its re-militarization policies and attempts to cover up its acts of aggression are increasingly raising concerns among neighboring countries and most nations in the Asia-Pacific region. Zakharova once again urged the Japanese authorities to return to their "peace constitution" stance.
