Zelensky Announces Cooperation Agreement with France on Air Defense Systems and Fighter Jet Procurement
Ukrainian President Zelensky stated on the 14th that Ukraine has reached multiple defense cooperation agreements with France, including missile production licenses, supply of air defense missile systems, and procurement of "Rafale" fighter jets.
Zelensky indicated that under the agreements, Ukraine will receive SCALP cruise missiles, AASM air-to-ground guided bombs, and a license to jointly produce Aster 30 missiles with Italy. France will also collaborate with Ukraine and other partners within the framework of the "FREYA" anti-ballistic missile program.
Zelensky mentioned that Ukraine will procure the first batch of 16 French "Rafale" fighter jets along with their supporting weapons. This year, training for Ukrainian pilots and mechanics will commence in France, and subsequently, the first four "Rafale" fighter jets will be delivered to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Zelensky also stated that Ukraine will become the first country to receive the new enhanced version of the Franco-Italian joint SAMP/T NG air defense missile system. France will provide two sets of SAMP/T systems to Ukraine this year, and France and Italy will expedite the delivery of Aster 30 missiles before October this year.
The SAMP/T NG air defense system embodies Europe's aspiration to reduce external defense dependency. It is developed by the European missile group and Thales through a joint venture called European SAM Defense Missile Company, and it is currently the only medium- to long-range air defense system in Europe capable of simultaneously addressing ballistic missiles, highly mobile targets, and saturation attacks.
