On April 24 local time, European Commission President von der Leyen stated that consideration is being given to expanding the scope of the EU Navy's "Operation Aspide" (EU Red Sea Escort Operation), transitioning from a primarily escort-focused mission to a more collaborative joint maritime operation.
The EU officially launched the Red Sea Escort Operation in February 2024. A statement released by the EU Council indicated that the operation aims to maintain maritime security in the Red Sea and surrounding waters and ensure freedom of navigation, particularly for commercial vessels. On March 1 of this year, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Borrell announced that the EU would reinforce the EU Navy's "Operation Aspide" by deploying additional vessels to enhance maritime security.
