KC-46 Pegasus

The KC-46 Pegasus is a Boeing 767-derived aerial refueling and transport aircraft developed for the U.S. Air Force. It is intended to replace older KC-135 tankers while adding defensive systems, cargo flexibility, passenger movement, aeromedical evacuation, and improved connectivity for distributed air operations.

The aircraft can refuel boom-equipped and probe-equipped receivers, carry palletized cargo, move personnel, and support medical evacuation. Its defensive suite and communications architecture make it more than a flying fuel station: it can contribute to force-wide situational awareness while keeping fighters, bombers, transports, and surveillance aircraft on station.

The KC-46 programme has faced technical issues, especially around remote vision and refueling-system maturity, but it remains central to U.S. tanker recapitalization. A modern tanker fleet is essential for Indo-Pacific distances, nuclear and conventional bomber support, rapid reinforcement, and coalition air campaigns.
