Mitsubishi F-2

The F-2 was developed through Japanese and American cooperation, using the F-16 as a basis but substantially adapting the airframe, avionics, radar, and mission fit for Japanese needs. It is used for air defence, anti-ship strike, and tactical support missions. The aircraft is important because it gave Japan experience in fighter development and integration while sustaining domestic aerospace industry.

Japan's geography makes maritime airpower central to defence planning. The F-2's larger wing, radar and weapons integration support missions over sea lanes and island approaches, including the use of anti-ship missiles. Its operational value is therefore tied to defending airspace and threatening hostile surface forces at distance.
