Variable-geometry successor to the MiG-21
mediumThe MiG-23 introduced variable-sweep wings and more capable radar and missile options to Soviet tactical aviation.
The Mikoyan MiG-23 Flogger was developed to move Soviet fighter capability beyond the lightweight MiG-21. Its variable-geometry wing allowed better takeoff, landing, and high-speed performance tradeoffs, while its radar and missile fit gave later variants a stronger beyond-visual-range role. The aircraft became a major Soviet and Warsaw Pact fighter and was exported widely, producing many national subvariants and combat records.
