Orlan-10 became one of Russia's most visible tactical UAVs, optimized for reconnaissance, target acquisition and artillery correction.

Orlan-10 was developed by Special Technology Center in St. Petersburg as a tactical fixed-wing UAV for Russian ground forces. Before 2022 it was already associated with Russian reconnaissance and electronic-warfare support, but the war in Ukraine made it internationally prominent. Its design favors affordability, range and repeated field use over high-end stealth or speed. The aircraft is launched by catapult, recovered by parachute and operated by small ground teams. This made it suitable for battalion and brigade-level reconnaissance, especially when paired with artillery units that need persistent observation rather than a one-time target report.

The Orlan-10 airframe carries electro-optical, infrared, communications or electronic payloads and is recovered by parachute.

Technically, Orlan-10 is a small fixed-wing UAV with a gasoline engine, pusher propeller, modular payload bay and ground-control system. Public specifications describe endurance measured in many hours and operating ranges suitable for tactical reconnaissance. The aircraft can carry cameras, thermal sensors, communications relay payloads or electronic-warfare-related equipment depending on mission fit. Its simple launch and parachute recovery reduce runway dependence, while its airframe cost is low enough for wartime attrition. The tradeoff is vulnerability: it is not fast or stealthy, and once air defenses and electronic-warfare units locate it, losses can be significant.

Orlan-10's operational value is its ability to find targets, adjust fires and support Russian sensor-to-shooter loops at scale.

In Ukraine and earlier Russian operations, Orlan-10 has been most important as part of the reconnaissance-strike chain. It can locate Ukrainian positions, correct artillery fire, assess damage and relay information to commanders. RUSI's wartime analysis highlighted the importance of Russian UAVs for artillery adjustment, and Orlan-10 is central to that pattern. The platform also appears in electronic-warfare and communications support roles. Its impact does not depend on being individually sophisticated; it comes from numbers, persistence and integration with fires. Counter-UAV jamming and air defense can reduce its effectiveness, but it remains a key Russian tactical UAV.
