ASM-2 advanced Japan's indigenous air-launched anti-ship missile line beyond ASM-1.
ASM-2, or Type 93, was developed as a more capable Japanese air-launched anti-ship missile following ASM-1. It represented Japan's continued investment in domestic maritime strike weapons for air defence of the home islands and surrounding sea lanes. The missile was intended to improve range, seeker performance, and warhead effectiveness over the earlier Type 80.
ASM-2 improved range and terminal targeting with turbojet propulsion and infrared guidance.
Compared with ASM-1, ASM-2 is described as using a turbojet engine and imaging-infrared guidance, giving it improved reach and terminal discrimination. It was designed for Japanese strike aircraft such as the F-2 and related maritime attack roles. The design shows Japan's move from first-generation domestic missiles toward more sophisticated seekers and propulsion.
ASM-2 continued Japan's aircraft-based sea-denial capability before newer missile generations.
ASM-2 helped sustain Japan's air-launched maritime strike capability while later weapons such as ASM-3 and upgraded Type 12-related systems emerged. Its role is important in Japan's defensive geography: aircraft-launched anti-ship missiles help hold hostile surface forces at risk around island approaches. The missile therefore fits a wider anti-access and sea-denial posture.
