Research Notes

Smoothbore-gun successor to T-55

medium

T-62 introduced a 115 mm smoothbore gun but did not fully replace the simpler T-55 family.

The T-62 was developed as a Soviet main battle tank that pushed beyond the T-54/T-55 family with a 115 mm smoothbore gun. FAS notes that by the 1980s it was replaced in first-line roles by newer T-64, T-72 and T-80 tanks. That transition explains why it is important but not as dominant as the T-55.

Better gun, limited growth path

medium

The T-62’s main appeal was firepower improvement, while ergonomics and modernization potential were more constrained.

T-62 capability centered on its smoothbore gun and conventional Soviet tank layout. It offered more anti-armor performance than earlier T-55s, but the design had limits in reload ergonomics, optics and later upgrade room. This made it a stepping stone toward newer Soviet tank concepts rather than the final answer.

Returned to visibility through reserve use

medium

Modern reactivation shows how older tanks can re-enter service when attrition and stockpiles matter.

T-62’s current relevance comes from reserve stocks and reactivation. Even when outclassed by modern MBTs, an older tank can provide fire support or fill gaps if enough vehicles and parts exist. The page should capture this gap between original Cold War role and modern emergency use.
