Ariete was developed by the Iveco-Oto Melara consortium to give the Italian Army a domestic main battle tank.
Ariete is Italy’s national main battle tank, developed by the Consorzio Iveco Oto Melara industrial partnership. Army Technology profiles the C1 Ariete as an Italian main battle tank, and recent CIO material shows the platform continuing through C2 upgrade work. The tank is therefore both a 1990s MBT and a current modernization project.
The tank’s original strengths require sensor, protection and automotive upgrades to remain credible against modern threats.
Ariete capability is built around a conventional Western MBT layout with a 120 mm gun and Italian fire-control and automotive systems. Modern battlefield threats make the C2 modernization important because protection, mobility, electronics and situational awareness matter as much as the original gun and armor package.
Italy’s limited Ariete fleet means modernization directly affects national heavy armor credibility.
Ariete’s service context is defined by fleet size and modernization. Italy does not operate a very large MBT force, so the C2 upgrade program has outsized importance for readiness and interoperability.
