The Heckler & Koch G3 is a 7.62x51 mm NATO battle rifle adopted by West Germany and widely exported during the Cold War. It combined German production with CETME-derived roller-delayed blowback principles, becoming one of the most recognizable postwar battle rifles.
The G3's roller-delayed mechanism avoided a conventional gas system and helped create a robust, relatively simple rifle around full-power NATO ammunition. It offered range, penetration, and durability, but also brought recoil and weapon weight that later intermediate-caliber rifles reduced.
G3 influence extends far beyond Bundeswehr service. Licensed production, variants, and derivatives spread across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Even where replaced as a primary rifle, G3-pattern weapons often remain in reserve, marksman, police, or second-line roles because of durability and ammunition availability.
